This module synthesizes global best practices and regulatory frameworks to guide the development of effective, species-focused conservation strategies for whale sharks, emphasizing their highly migratory nature and the need for protection across multiple habitats and jurisdictions. It highlights focal-species–based Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as a strategic approach to safeguard aggregation sites, feeding areas, nursery habitats, and migration corridors, while delivering wider ecosystem benefits through the whale shark’s role as an umbrella and charismatic species. The module underscores the importance of integrating science-based zoning, strong legal protection at international, national, and local levels, stakeholder participation, and adaptive management to address dynamic threats such as fisheries interactions, vessel traffic, tourism pressure, and climate change. Together, these elements provide a comprehensive framework for designing and managing whale shark conservation areas that are ecologically effective, socially acceptable, and resilient over time.
