Konservasi Indonesia (KI) and Conservation International Timor-Leste are advancing collaborative marine conservation in the eastern Lesser Sunda Seascape, a critical zone within the Coral Triangle. The Wetar-Ombai Strait, shared by Indonesia and Timor-Leste, harbors rich ecosystems—coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves—and serves as a vital migratory corridor for marine megafauna, including whales, dolphins, sharks, and rays.
To safeguard biodiversity and sustain fisheries, both organizations are promoting a collaborative Marine Protected Area (MPA) network, joint species monitoring, and integrated fisheries management. Recognizing deeprooted cultural ties between border communities, this initiative also emphasizes inclusive, community-driven stewardship.
A key milestone was the March 2025 stakeholders’ forum in Kupang, which underscored youth engagement as essential to long-term conservation success. In response, KI and CI Timor-Leste launched a bilateral Youth Ocean Jamboree 2025 to empower future leaders from both nations in marine resource management.
