About Sundaland

The Sunda Shelf region (Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan) has high biodiversity with tropical rainforest and lowland forest ecosystems that need to be preserved, amidst the rapid population growth, which demands the need for space and natural resources to meet its needs. Konservasi Indonesia works in the provinces of North Sumatra and West Java to conserve important ecosystems, such as forests, wetlands, and marine ecosystems that are important in maintaining climate stability.

Forests in the provinces of North Sumatra and West Java play an important role as habitats for key animals, such as orangutans, Sumatran tigers, Javan leopards and Javan gibbons. On the other hand, North Sumatra and West Java are also the world's largest producers of commodities, such as coffee, chocolate, rubber, palm oil and horticulture.

Good agricultural practices (GAP/Good Agricultural Practices) is applied to farmers to increase production, while preventing the expansion of plantations into forests. Meanwhile, forest, peat and mangrove areas in North Sumatra and West Java are natural capital that need to be managed to help maintain climate stability. Konservasi Indonesia works to preserve and restore this natural capital together with the government, from the provincial to village levels, educational institutions, community organizations, and local communities.

“Indonesian Conservation in North Sumatra and West Java works to maintain climate stability and implement an environmentally friendly economic development approach together with stakeholders.”
