The Sahul-Papua ecoregion is blessed with natural resources and biodiversity, both on land and in the water. As part of the ecoregion, various studies have shown that Tanah Papua is an 'evolutionary cauldron.' Papua is 'home' to dense and dense forests, mountains, stunning coral reefs, and extraordinary terrestrial and marine biodiversity, including a variety of endemic fauna.
Konservasi Indonesia supports the government, and collaborates with local academics and educational institutions, non-government partners, and local communities, in the provinces of West Papua and Southwest Papua in managing biological natural resources, through an integrated landscape approach that has an impact on the local economy.
This is an inseparable effort in realizing the West Papua initiative as a “Sustainable Development Province,” which is expected to be realized in Southwest Papua Province and other provinces in Indonesia.
Konservasi Indonesia continues the work of Conservation International, which began in 2001 with other development partners in establishing and developing a network of marine conservation areas in the Bird's Head Seascape to:
Encourage sustainable management of fisheries resource utilization.
Increasing the capacity of communities and stakeholders, and
Developing alternative economic initiatives for coastal communities in Southwest Papua Province and West Papua Province.
On land, Indonesian Conservation makes efforts:
Strengthening the management of forest area networks and other terrestrial ecosystems, known as the Papua Crown Jewel initiative.
Encourage community-based forest management through a social forestry management model, especially in South Sorong Regency, Southwest Papua Province and in Fakfak Regency, West Papua Province.
Together with partners, the Raja Ampat Research and Conservation Center (RARCC) developed a program agroforestry in Tambrauw Regency, Southwest Papua Province.
Indonesian Conservation also carries out environmental conservation efforts and management of natural biological resources that are cross-landscape in nature, such as:
Climate change adaptation program;
Conservation of protected and/or charismatic species such as manta rays, whale sharks, walking sharks, zebra sharks and coconut crabs; as well as
Encourage the implementation of sustainability principles (sustainability) for tourism in West Papua and Southwest Papua.
To achieve long-term goals, every effort of Indonesian Conservation in West Papua and Southwest Papua is always based on five approaches, namely a scientific basis for decision-making, support for indigenous communities, environmental education, increasing internal capacity and for local partners, and policy changes that support environmental conservation and sustainable management of natural resources.
WORK LOCATION
In the Sahul-Papua ecoregion, Indonesian Conservation works specifically in Raja Ampat, Kaimana, Fakfak, South Sorong, Tambrauw and Manokwari.
In Raja Ampat, Kaimana and Fakfak, together with the government and strategic partners, Konservasi Indonesia has built marine conservation areas with an area that now covers 2.482.200,52 hectares, and assists in the development of management units in each area so that they are able to finance management independently and sustainably.
The development of these marine conservation areas is part of an effort to protect 50% of the total area of the province's waters, with 20% of it being a no-take area or no take zone.
Through efforts organized from Manokwari as the center of government of West Papua, Konservasi Indonesia is one of the government's partners in realizing the vision of the Mahkota Permata Tanah Papua initiative into a concrete action plan.
The Crown Jewel of Papua is an initiative to strengthen the protection and sustainable management of approximately 2,3 million hectares of forest in West Papua and Southwest Papua, and is the embodiment of the provincial government's vision to protect 70% of the forest area in West Papua, encourage sustainable economic opportunities, and support indigenous communities to manage their natural resources.
In South Sorong Regency, Konservasi Indonesia works closely with indigenous communities in five villages in Konda District in developing community-based forest management initiatives, through a social forestry scheme covering an area of 37.371 hectares. The same initiative was also carried out in Ubadari Village, Fakfak Regency, covering an area of 769 hectares.
In Tambrauw Regency, Konservasi Indonesia facilitated local partners to create a demonstration program. agroforestry on 20 hectares of critical land in the Kebar plains.
